FOSSE RIDERS
| Mike Fairhead 7 Brickman Close Leicester Forest East Leicester. LE3 3NJ Mob: 07885 254545 Home: 0116 2392992 Dear Sirs Could you please assist me in finding ex members of the Fosse Riders Motorcycle Association. We are 50 years old this year and are holding a ‘Fosse Riders Ball’ on the 5th September in Leicester to celebrate this occasion and would like as many old Fosse Riders to be there as possible. I’m sure that with your help we can find a few of those ex members.Where are you now? Were you once a member of Leicester’s oldest bike club, the Fosse Riders? If you were then contact Mike Fairhead, the clubs publicity Officer, on 07885 254 545, as he is keen to meet up with as many ex members as he can for a good old wallow in nostalgia.Mike reckons there must be a few hundred of them out there, still living locally as the club has always been run in and around Leicester and Leicestershire. Anyone interested in going along to the Dinner Dance and meeting up with old mates can contact Mike Fairhead on 07885-254545, or email: mike.fairhead@ntlworld.com. Mike joined the Fosse Riders in August 1960 and has been a full member ever since. He has owned many bikes and started his riding career by slapping ‘L’ plates on a 500cc Norton International. Today he rides a Honda ST1300 Pan European motorcycle. The Fosse Riders is a local motorcycle club based in Leicester and back in 1959 was set up to cater for Touring road bikes. It still continues today to follow the same rules laid out back then. If you’re a ‘born again biker’ or just starting out on life’s big adventures and wanting to ride your bike then why not join the Fosse Riders. They meet every Thursday evening from 8pm onwards at their club house, just inside Western Park, off the A47 Hinckley Road, Leicester, next to the Eco House. The Fosse Riders got its name when a group of riders got together to ride their bikes and their first run was along the old Fosse Way. They decided to form their own motorcycle club and chose the name Fosse Riders. The formation of the club was announced in MCN on 2nd October 1959. That was 50 years ago and today the club still continues to play host to bike enthusiasts from all over Leicestershire, and they even have supporters from as far a field as the Wirral and London. Since the heyday of motorcycle clubs back in the 1960’s, the Club has seen its membership fluctuate over the years and being forced to move their headquarters several times in the early years certainly didn’t help. After several moves they decided to search for more permanent premises and found them just inside Western Park on the A47 Hinckley Road where they have remained for more than 30 years. This has proved an undoubted bonus allowing members to enjoy weekly social get togethers, as well as some great parties. The only time the club room closes is Christmas week. Camping Rallies, bike Shows, Continental Touring, weekend ride outs, Charity runs etc etc are all part and parcel of club life. If members want to do something then it’s done. In November a weekend trip to Prague is planned.Throughout its 50 years the club has been more like a dating agency than a bike club. Many members have found true love whilst getting their leg over (their bikes of course) and only last year two couples who met at the Fosse Riders got married. We have always been lucky and have attracted many ladies to our club. So if you are feeling a little left out of things and want to spice up your social life, then why not give the Fosse Riders a go. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.Mike Fairhead. |
